Landing one’s dream consultant assignment – unexpectedly!

Marko is an Mpyan working as a consultant with his core in backend engineering. His fascination to tech started early and led him to both working at startups in various roles as well as competing in programming.

Since the very beginning Marko has felt a calling for machine learning and natural language processing. This passion has been a guiding star for his personal development, a goal to be reached one day.

Little did he know, however, how soon this dream would come true!

This is a story of how you never know what is right around the corner – and how that’s the beauty of consulting.

“Good things in life
come when we
expect them the least.”

“Earlier this year I was contacted by a company telling me that they had read my master thesis about Natural Language Processing. They had been trying to reach me for quite some time with a specific question in mind.

The company offers a wide range of services in financing, and wanted to implement a solution for the exact problem that I have investigated.

At first I found it hard to believe, because – let’s be honest here – I never even dreamt of someone reading my thesis, let alone liking it! However, after a couple of emails back and forth all that initial bafflement turned into growing excitement.

Working as a data scientist was in many ways a dream come true for me at that point. I got the opportunity to continue the research I had started in the university and apply all of the theoretical knowledge that I had acquired. I really enjoyed working on a popular, but still quite undiscovered field of applying Natural Language Processing on financial documents. I found it quite interesting, but also challenging to see how my solution compares to other products in the market.

Above all, I can’t help myself not to think daily about how good things in life can come when we expect them the least and from least expected direction.

If I’ve learned one thing from this experience, it is that all the effort and hard work that we put in will someday pay off no matter how small or insignificant we think it is.”
